JANUARYor, it's cold outside

happy new decade! it's january, smack in the middle of palo alto's ridicu-brief rainy season. it's also cold and dark more often than usual. man, winter's the best. anyway, this month's selection goes real well with clouds and cold and dark, and i guess a couple of the songs even have to do with the new year. how 'bout that.

so: i've been sort of obsessed with the harlem shakes ever since i first heard them come on shuffle in a crowded muni bus in san francisco this summer. real bright, real sunny, sort of a folk-poppy feel going on; we'll be hearing more of them when it gets a little brighter outside. frightened rabbit are a group of folks out of scotland, and i'm always amazed whenever i stumble across them in my library and remember how consistently good they are. you remember the silent years from a few months ago, they did "black hole".

the cave singers are a few dudes out of portland, and so, according to the rules associated with being a band from portland, at least one of them has a completely epic beard. i'm not quite sure what bell x1's story is - i think they're a poppy band out of australia or europe or something, and while i did try listening to a bunch of their other songs, i didn't like any of them except for this one - but i'm partial to the drum machine beat thing they have going on here. you remember paleo from a while back, he did "in the morning linda dies".

four tet is a completely excellent guy who makes electronic music, and this is one of his songs. makes you feel like everything's all right, doesn't it? i'm actually seeing him this month - hoo-ray. final fantasy did "your light is spent" in november's issue, and is apparently coming out with a new album pretty soon. the xx are a band that it is very cool to like these days - i think their stuff is pretty decent but usually kinda unremarkable, but am a fan of the feel and guitar riff from this song. finally, slaraffenland did "open your eyes" a month or two ago, and are real good at making very pretty music that somehow manages to slightly depress a person even though it's so pretty. in any case: happy new year.

about

every month, i'll put up a new mixtape on the right side of this inter net site, and some words having to do with that mixtape will run down the left side. some tapes will have more or fewer songs than others, and sometimes tapes will have themes. i hope that the one thing that they will all have in common will be that they are all made of good music, and that my mom and anyone else who cares to listen to them will find new music that they like by listening to these things.

which reminds me: this site is a birthday present for my mom. because, in the words of a wise otter, my mom should always get presents because she is my mom. for the technically inclined: this site is powered by php, duct tape, sheer force of concentration, and a modified version of opentape.

my name is jrheard.
